Essay Question #10. A person’s wish to die is often ambivalent. In addition, most people who think about suicide may not act. How, then, should an advanced practice nurse decide whether to hospitalize a person who is considering suicide (says during the office visit that they are thinking about suicide) or even one who has made an attempt? (Hint: Do some independent research related to Shneidman’s distinctions between people who intentionally end their lives—cite your resources. Examine the suicide prevention strategies discussed in class.)

#11. The incidence of eating disorders (incidence=new cases) has been increasing over the past thirty years. Find one article in a scholarly research journal (for example, Journal of Nursing Research or Journal of Abnormal Psychology) that suggests what might be responsible for the increase. Cite the article and provide a brief (5-10 lines) summary.

This assignment will combine two issues that you, as a healthcare professional, need to consider when working with families that have a family member with a psychological disorder: the impact of the illness on other family members and alternative therapies.

1. Read the article “Wonder Dog” from New York Times Magazine. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/05/magazine/wonder-dog.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
2. Describe what you have learned about fetal alcohol syndrome (that is, what you know now that you did not know before). Try to list from 3-5 pieces of information. Cite your resources.

3. Now role play. If you were a nurse in an obstetric practice, describe how you might inform a pregnant client about the dangers of drinking during pregnancy. Do this in conversational form.

Example:
Me: Your child currently has a diagnosis of _____. Have you and or other family members ever explored the possibility of alternative therapies for your child? What have you thought about?

4. How do you personally feel about the use of animal assisted therapy as a treatment adjunctive (or adjuvant) for childhood psychological disorders? What type of evidence (remember, your case is an anecdotal report on one client) would you need to begin to explore this as a resource for families of a child with a psychological disorder?

5. Now project forward in time about 5 years. Pay attention to that last instruction. You might want to write down the age of each person 5 years from now to help keep your focus. What do you believe is the outcome for these family members?
You also might want to read about caregiver stress (see National Family Caregiver Alliance website and the National Organization for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome [NOFAS]). Please make a comment about each family member listed below.
Harvey (dad)
Donnie (mom)
Morasha (sister)
Iyal (child with psychological disorder)
