Assessment Item 3
Description
Assessment Item 3 consists of a major critical essay (i.e. an essay
which argues a position) on Caring for People with Disruptive
Behaviours.
This assessment item arises out of the work that you have completed
throughout the course. To prepare for the assessment you need to have
completed the set reading and exercises and to have read widely on the
area of dementia and challenging behaviours.
Purpose
The purpose of Item 3 is to provide you with an opportunity to
undertake a detailed piece of writing and to practise formulating and
writing up an extended argument about the area of Disruptive
Behaviours. This item will assess your understanding of, and ability
to apply, some of the processes involved in caring for the individual
with dementia.
Instructions
The incidence of disruptive behavioural problems such as aggression,
agitation, sleep-wake and rest-activity pattern disturbance is
reported to be high in people with dementia. The specific determinants
of disruptive behaviour remain unclear but predisposing factors are
thought to be related to external factors such as the environment and
negative staff attitudes. In essay format explore with research
literature to support the importance of a positive environment
including staff interaction and attitudes towards the aggressive
client with dementia.
