Solution-What combination of chromosomes are possible in

Q. A diploid cell contains three pairs of homologous chromosomes designated C1 and C2, M1 and M2, and S1 and S2. No crossing over occurs.

a. What combination(s) of chromosomes are possible in daughter cells following mitosis? C1, C2, M1, M2, S1 and S2. In mitosis the daughter cells copy the mother cell. There is not any crossing over of material to create a new combination.

b. What combination(s) of chromosomes are possible in haploid cells following both divisions of meiosis? (Hint: remember independent assortment)

After the second division of meiosis, the chromosomes would be C1/M1/S1, C1/M1/S2, C2/M1/S1, C2/M2/S2, C1/M2/S1, C2/M1/S2, C1/M2/S2, C2/M2/S1. The second division of meiosis creates daughter cells from the chromosomes. These are genetically the similar material or a copy of the chromosome created after the first meiosis.
