Sociological Theory

Description

1) Much classical sociological theory attempts to address the Hobbesian question of “How is order possible?” How do conflict theories address the question of order? What are their assumptions about human nature, the state of nature, and the state of society?  Briefly explain your answer.

2)  What does Weber suggest will happen when charisma is routinized in the form of legal/rationalism versus traditionalism? Explain.  How does this differ from what Marx suggested would occur? Next, how does legal/rational routinization affect criteria for elite status, privilege, and mobility?  (Note: This is a two-part question.)

3)  In what ways does Simmel differ from Marx and Weber in his interpretation of the role of conflict in society and in what ways does Mannheim differ from Marx and Weber in his interpretation of ideology?  Justify your argument with examples and a discussion of Simmel’s discussion of conflict and Mannheim’s interpretation of ideology.
