Semper-Fi

SEMPER- FI

Semper-Fi (Semper Fidelis) was adopted in 1883 as a Marine Corps motto which means Always Faithful. For a long time, this motto has been respected by the Marine Corps which has been a clear prove that there has been no rebellion or even an imagination of doing so by the Marines of the United States. The abbreviation of this motto by the Marine Corps was a sign of being committed and loyal to the comrades- in- arms of the Marines.  Before the adoption of the Semper-Fi motto, there had been three other mottos that had been used by the Marines and which were not official but rather traditional. The initial on was fortitudine meaning with fortitude; which was adopted during the 1812 war followed by the second which was; By Sea and By Land and the third; To the Shores of Tripoli which was used until Semper-Fi was finally adopted. This motto is usually shared by the Marine Corps together with the Devonshire Regiment of England, the 11th Foot and one of the British Army regiments senior infantry.

This motto is not only limited to being faithful to the Marines but in addition it express their fitfulness to their God, their family, the country of their service and the fellow corps. This loyalty devotes these corps to the belief that once they enter in the profession of being Marine corps; they will always be corps. Having a strong influence to the Marine life, this motto play an integral role in what and who these corps will be while in the military and also once they are out of the military, what their life will be. Therefore, through this motto, the bonds of the Marine Corps are usually distinguished from any other; going beyond the normal teamwork, this is usually a brotherhood that lasts forever. Basically, it is factual that venturing in the Marine is usually an irreversible transformation; with the Semper-Fi reminding this to the military, that all the days of their lives, they will forever have to live by the corps values and ethics. Therefore, to those Marines leaving the military, they are always governed by the motto which reminds them to continually adhere to the Marine principles with a clear understanding that there exists no ex- Marine as they are all Marine Corps whether retired or still serving the military. Semper-Fi usually leads the Marine Corps to remaining as always faithful to the mission that defines their profession no matter what may happen next.

In the Marine military, a sense of being a family is usually bred by these comrades, a sense of family that has hardly been understood by any other group. This unity is has been planted by the motto, which is advanced with loyalty and sacrifice. In addition to this, the actions of every day life of a Marine usually embodies the predecessors legacy, through the right path set by them through being devoted to the motto, having the courage to endure the challenges, being committed, persevering and compassionate in the military.  Failure by a Marine to uphold their standards in addition to honoring the them selves or their fellow corps in the Marine results in disrespecting the motto; which clearly indicates a failure of accomplishing the tasks at hand, and through failure to follow the daily standards that are ethical, the Marine cannot be expected to uphold the foundations that seeks to define who the Marine really is. Therefore, this motto guides the Marines in understanding what it means to be in the military and based on this understanding they begin the journey in military
