Low-resolution of facial images drastically lowers the effectiveness and reliability of
facial recognition. This report reviews research based on the resolution of CCTV cameras.
The focus was confined to addressing the problem as to why CCTV cameras have been
capturing lower resolution images while other cameras have become very powerful; effects of
increasing the number of pixels in the CCTV chips for better resolution are discussed; the
relationship between camera TVL (Tele Vision Lines) and horizontal resolution for the
digital system is also identified. Findings suggest that most footage captured by CCTV
cameras have been known to have inferior quality due to poor resolution hence the loss of
evidence in the event of a case requiring court evidence.
