Focus:
Use relevant strategic management literature and theory to analyse the case of the Qantas Group in the timeframe of the case presented in Hanson et al, 2014 and Mules’ 2013 update on the Qantas – Emirates Alliance. Your analysis should conclude with a) reasons for supporting or not supporting some or all of Qantas’ current strategies, b) a brief update on market reports for whether the alliance has alleviated or perpetuated the problems faced by Qantas and c) one or two key recommendations for Qantas’ executive leadership group.
In this individual assignment, students will present a detailed analysis of the Qantas Group, supporting their analysis with appropriate theory from chapters 1-4 and relevant sections from chapters 9 and 12 of the textbook and other academic sources, such as referred journals. The use of professional sources (eg business magazines etc) is also permissible.
The main focus of the assignment is to demonstrate:
? familiarity with, and understanding of relevant strategic management theory, as it applies to the case,
? depth and breadth of research,
? analytical skills,
? academic writing abilities.
As a guide, your analysis of the present situation (mission, external environment, internal capabilities/competencies/competitive advantages, and strategic actions/policies) should take approximately 60-70% of the paper. Your update and recommendations (including some justification) should be approximately 25-35%. The introduction that outlines the key issues, would most likely take about 5% of the paper.
