PUBLIC POLICY AND ECONOMIC FILM: INSIDE JOB

NAACP will monitor Tea Party poll Watchers

The article was written by Deborah Barfield Berry of Gannet Washington Bureau on the 23rd of June 2014. The article is about the senate elections in Mississippi and claims of voter registration.

There will be new elections of the senator of Mississippi, and there are fears of voters’ intimidation. The elections officials stated that they had already sent out officials to the cities. There had been reports by the media that some politicians were keen on challenging the decision of the black population. The reports are from the tea party activists who claim that black voters have been intimidated into not voting in the high profile elections(Berry, 2014).

The president of NAACP in Mississippi, Derrick Johnson, has issued out a warning that they will observe the political parties closely for such cases and that anyone found to intimidate voters will not be tolerated. The only people who are allowed to question the voters are the poll officials. Guidelines on how politicians are supposed to conduct themselves including how far they should be from the polling stations are given. Officials state that politicians have no mandate to place election observers near the political stations. The black population could play a huge role in the run-off polls. Politicians are desperate for votes and are campaigning in every way that they can so that they can win the elections(Berry, 2014).

The article is correct in grammar and comprehension of the issue at hand and is not biased towards any candidate or political party. The article helps me to understand the rights of both the voters and the politicians. The topic should not only apply in Mississippi, but in all the states in the country. It is necessary that every citizen are aware of their rights and their obligations in regards to voting.
