For this paper (4 paragraphs) I have to write a press release. It will be for a company that we hypothetically made called Your College Mom. I will attach a file that includes the mission statement of the company and the template the professor has asked us to use for the press release
Objectives
¢Practice fitting your ideas into a document format common in product marketing
¢Tailor your ideas to motivate a specific audience (journalists) to give free publicity for your product
Description
Write a press release announcing that will capture the attention of a journalist or other media professional. Your company is new and you’re looking for publicity (which is free and effective) rather than advertising (which is expensive and not so effective).
Make sure you target the information you present aligns to the needs and interests of the journalist reading the press release. You will want to excite your reader about your product or company while convincing her that what you are describing is newsworthy and interesting to HER readers.
For help with format and tips on strategy, I have posted a number of resources in the module and in files. However, pay particular attention to the handout Getting the Press on Your Side. Use the press release template I have posted to structure your ideas and prevent you from writing merely an advertisement for your product or service since it has a section explicitly devoted to Company Information.
Evaluation
I will use this assignment as a diagnostic tool to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of your writing. If there are significant problems with your ability to write clearly and effectively in a business environment, I will discuss possible strategies to work on these issues during our conference.
In giving a grade, I will consider the following criteria:
¢Is the information given appropriate to the audience and purpose of the document?
¢Is the information organized to create a strong argument that persuades your reader of the importance of the news you are trying to announce?
¢Is the document well-edited and free of major grammar and usage errors?
¢Does the press release follow the conventions current in the business world for this kind of document?
