Pathophysiology/pharmacology

You will prepare an essay (maximum 1000 words including in-text citations but excluding the reference list) in which you will justify why a pharmaceutical agent was prescribed for a pathological condition (case study below) The assignment should be structured as a topical review. That is, it will contain an introduction that outlines the pathophysiology of the disease, followed by a justification of your reasoning why the pharmaceutical agent was prescribed. You will need to support that justification using recent research literature with peer-reviewed published evidence to support your argument. Subject textbooks are not appropriate sources of information. Your evidence may be based on factors such as drug efficacy, comparative side effects or common contraindications or other factors that provide benefit (eg. use in a combinatorial drug treatment). The review will then end with a conclusion that will sum up the arguments and offer a definitive conclusion to reinforce your decision.

Case Study!!!
A 24-year-old woman presented with a 12 kg weight gain over 6 months (mostly abdominal),hirsutism, acne, ankle oedema, poor libido and lightened menses. Upon physical examination she was grossly Cushingoid with florid clinical manifestations. A blood test show elevated levels of ACTH and an MRI of her pituitary gland showed a non-operable benign pituitary adenoma. Her endocrinologist commenced her on metyrapone.
