Heading: single spaced, name, course title, date, OP/ED essay.

An OP/ED should be fun and requires your keen argumentative skills; the genre demands for you to write with the intent to grab the attention of the audience (a typical Miami Herald reader) and stimulate his/her thinking in order to ultimately influence his/her opinion to your side.

Your TOPIC: Write an essay in which you identify your position on the article of your choice.

You must pick a position. MAKE A CHOICE and back it.

Fundamental characteristics that should be implemented into an OP/ED piece:

A distinctive point of view
A new angle on the information presented

A consistent, coherent theme
Humor or Satire
Support your point with persuasive argument, facts, anecdotes, and a clear explanation of your claim
Immediately and precisely make your claim and move on to defend it (your thesis should be the first or second sentence in this essay; following thesis, you need to clearly and concisely present a logical argument for that claim)
