My desired future nursing role is clinical management. However, I have both personal and professional weaknesses that I should work on in order to achieve my future desires in my profession as a manager. The personal weakness is that I always want to make friendship with every individual I work with, in my workplace. The nature translates into a professional weakness in that I dislike reprimanding staff so as to avoid confrontations, which is a great threat to the achievement of my future nursing role that needs overcoming.
Nursing managers who cannot separate friendships from the normal duties in the nursing practice have a difficult time in realizing their full potential of implementing their managerial skills. In most cases, it’s not easy for a nurse manager to befriend everyone in his or her department of management. For my case, I have noted that such a thing poses a challenge to my future role. That is because there is a conflict of interest on whether to have all the staffs as my friends, which can compromise my profession’s managerial role or to achieve my professional role without necessarily befriending all the staff.
In the clinical setting, I need to reprimand some professionals who work under me and even criticize and or fire them among many other things. That can happen if the staffs fail to adhere to the set rules and regulations, policies and procedures. Such a thing can result in confrontations that may cut the friendship links. Due to my weaknesses, I may not be able to become an outstanding nurse manager unless I overcome them because the profession requires a no-nonsense nurse manager in order to uphold quality care.Furthermore, it’s only a no-nonsense nurse manager that can ensure that nurses conduct themselves in a professional manner and in line with the set codes of conduct, as well as the institutional policies. Therefore, I should overcome my personal and professional weaknesses so as to make a good nurse manager in the clinical setting.
Nurse leaders are very important in the achievement of my goals in the nursing profession. My goal is to become a nursing administrator at the local level. Transformational leadership promotes nurse satisfaction and positive work environment as well as reducing staff turnover. The nurse leader can motivate me as a nurse to undertake further studies in nursing administration, which can uphold my dream of becoming an administrator. Furthermore, a nursing leader can promote a good learning and working environment by addressing and enhancing the provision of key requirements and enhancements of conducive environments for learning.
Therefore, a transformational nurse leader is capable of molding an individual nurse from just an ‘ordinary nurse’ to an administrative nurse. My goal of becoming a nurse administrator will be achieved when I will be molded through on job training in the field of nurse administration in addition to keeping me motivated to achieve my goals. Having a good transformational leader is essential for the achievement of my nursing goals. That is through the noble motivational and training role the leader will offer.
