Module 8-Discussion Post
Paper details:
A portion of the readings this week emphasized the “relativity” of deviance. What is deviant in some contexts, is not deviant in others. Similarly, social groups define deviance differently. Within groups, however, individuals manage to internalize the group norms so that what is considered deviant within the group is recognized. Sometimes that recognition is followed by sanctions. More often than not, however, we “get away with it” unless some authority figure (mom, cop, store owner, etc.) is aware of the deviant activity.
Ok…here’s the question. What is the most deviant thing that you’ve ever done? What made the activity deviant? That is, what societal, contextual or group norms did it break? Are there many people, in your opinion, that engage in this activity although it is considered deviant? Do you think it will ever become an accepted “norm?”
Thoughts don’t count. For this discussion question, you can make your entries ANONYMOUS to each other (select “Post Message as Anonymous” under the textbox). Needless to say, your answers will remain confidential if you choose to post anonymously. I’ll take them to my grave….
