About: In this lab, you will create choropleth maps which you will use to describe the neighborhood in which you live. The lab is intended to introduce you to the ArcGIS interface, to basic mapping, and to working with simple attribute data. At the end of this lab, you should be able to create maps and use them to discuss basic geographic phenomena. Skills: The skills necessary to complete this lab are covered across 4 tutorials. Be sure to complete the tutorials before attempting the lab. These tutorials are… 1. Introduction to the ArcGIS Interface 2. Introduction to Attribute Data 3. Editing Symbology 4. Creating a Map Deliverables: 1. 4 choropleth maps of Erie County. Each map should show a unique selected census variable. The maps should show variation across Erie County and relevant “ground” features (e.g. neighboring counties). The maps should include the essential map elements and generally abide by good mapping principles. 2. A 2 page paper describing your neighborhood in the context of the maps you have produced. Discuss how the variables illustrate key aspects of your neighborhood. Discuss why you selected these 4 variables specifically.
