M4D reading responses

Reading 1: (1/1.5 pages)
This reading is in 2 parts. Part 1 is the complete introduction to Kevin Lynchs’ book ‘The Image of the City’ (MIT Press. 1960) Part 2 is an excerpt from chapter 3 which explains the 5 elements of cityscape legibility. Disregard the last few pages 49-53 as these were not meant to be in the scanned.
Use these questions to frame your written response.
1) What does Lynch mean by the ‘legibility of a city scape’ and ‘concept of imageability’ of a cityscape? Explain this.
2) Why does Lynch think it is important that citizens are able to form a mental image of a city? Explain this.
3) If you think of a market place as a microcosm of a city, how legible or image-able is the market site you have chosen?

Reading 2: (2/2.5 pages)
This essay ‘The Agency of Mapping: Speculation, Critiques and Invention’ was written by James Corner for the book ‘Mappings’ edited by Denis Cosgrove and published by Reaktion Books in 1999.
From this reading you will need to write a 500-800 word essay:
1) Extract the main points Corner makes about the revised agency of mapping from pgs 213 – 217 and also from the conclusion pgs 250-252. Explain what he means by the optimistic re-visioning of mapping, and the agency or efficacy of mapping practices.
2) Choose one of the 4 mapping research techniques (Drift, layering, game-board and rhizome) that Corner describes in detail. Discuss this thematic development of mapping in relation to its role in the re-visioning of mapping practise.
