Please read the two newspaper articles carefully and then write an essay that compares the authors’ arguments to those made in the course readings about language ideology and multilingualism. Consider in particular Sullivan’s (2004) paper on the challenges of interpreting multilingual, multijural legislation, and Haviland’s observations about language ideology in the legal system (see chapter 9 or the supplementary reading on Moodle). In particular, you should evaluate the authors’ claims about what kind of qualifications Canadian Supreme Court judges should have. How do these claims compare to the Sullivan’s observations about the interpretation of Canadian legal statutes? Does Sullivan’s study provide support to their arguments against Bill C-232? Or are there aspects that they don’t consider?
