I. Introduction 1 page maximum

d. What three aspects of Japanese culture does the paper address?

II. Body- 3.5 4 pages
a. Aspect 1
b. Aspect 2

III. Conclusion at most 1/2 page

Specific Requirements for Writing Assignments
In addition to the following requirements students should be aware that all writing in this course is considered formal scholarly writing and that incorrect spelling, grammar, usage, syntax, and vagueness will be heavily penalized as well as not paying attention to presentation (such as-pages out of order, print smeared or faded, or other presentation issues). Students are required to maintain a backup copy of all papers until grades have been finalized.
Requirements for all writing in this course:
1. When writing about the past use the past tense.
2. NEVER use vague terms such as "thing(s)" or "etc." in the writing for this course.
3. Write only in the third person for this course.
4. Introductions/conclusions must be brief one page maximum for this assignment- and reflect the specific nature of the assignment.
5. None of the writing assignments are comparison in nature. Do not compare the cultures you are writing about with any other culture-ancient or modern.
6. None of the writing assignments are narrative in nature. Do not tell the "story" or summarize any of the sources or section of the sources we use for the writing assignments.
Mechanics and format
Nota Bene: Papers that do not include ALL of the below requirements will not be accepted and earn a grade of zero. If you do not understand any aspect of the directionsask!

1. You must include a separate title page with the following information:
Title of your paper
Your name
The Date the paper is due
The course and time of class
Instructor’s name
2. Include a separate works cited page corresponding to the exact format in The Chicago Manual of Style.
3. Staple on the top left please.
4. The paper must be double-spaced, using Times New Roman font, size 12, black ink.
5. Page numbers on the bottom right. Only number the pages of text, not the title page or bibliography page.
6. The pages of text should only have text on them for this assignment-Not your name or other information, or images.
7. Titles as well as foreign words and phrases are to be italicized (note: the exceptions are personal and place names).
8. No clichés, slang, false, or vague statements. Be exceedingly aware of the words you use and their exact meanings.
9. Citations for this assignment will be in the form of in-text parenthetical citations at the end of the sentence containing the fact. EVERY bit of information you use from the text must be cited. Here are examples of how to cite The Tosa Diary:
Initial citation include author, name of work, and page number.

10. The paper must be at least five full pages in length (with a minimum of 22 lines per page and one inch margins), not counting the title page and bibliography page. Papers less than five full pages and over five and one-half full pages in length will not be accepted and earn a grade of zero.
