How do family members and/or friends support undergraduate students throughout their studies? Academic Essay

The performance of undergraduate students depends a lot on the amount of support that they get from their family and friends. The location of the research is situated within America so as to provide a focused understanding of the matter. The research investigated used quantitative as well as qualitative methods. The researchers used the data collection method of surveys. The works use theoretical approaches delving into psychological theories as well as other social science theories. This was consistent among the articles that would be discussed in the course of the paper.

Eisenberg et al. (2010) explored the issue of financial stress for undergraduate students via qualitative research. The support from family members can help the students with problems of depression, anxiety and stress so as to help the students pursue their studies with propriety (Eisenberg et al. 2010). Zepke (2010) American study investigated how family members can also play an active role in the academic work of the students via surveying. The article explains how family members can help students in doing better in studies by enhancing their organizational skills and management abilities (Zepke 2010, pp. 170-174).

Various qualitative and quantitative methods have been used in ascertaining the role of parents in supporting students. Brown’s (2008) article describes how social support and the help of the family members can help undergraduate students feel more protected in the educational institutions and the society as well. The study specifically deals with African American students who are helped by their friends and family in the process of racial socialization. This article though older, deals with one of the most complicated issues of society and educational system (Brown 2008, pp. 34-38). Dahlstrom & Bichsel (2014) conducted a qualitative study and gounf that students use technology to connect to their friends and family. This provides the students with the mental support when it comes to betterment in studies (Dahlstorm & Bichsel 2014).

The qualitative study by Jenkins et al. (2013) delves into the importance of providing social support to undergraduate students. The article discusses about the tendency of the students to get depressed if they do not find the support of friends and family (Jenkins et. al 2013, pp. 129-140). Yusoff (2012) discusses the importance of socialization in case of the international students. The adverse effect of the culture and society are taken into account. The mental support of friends and family helps the students to adjust with the new culture and do better in studies as well (Yusoff 2012, pp.356-360). Duffy’s (2010) qualitative study describes how support of family can render more confidence and aim in the student. The students who had been focus of this study were drawn from locales of America. The article explicates how students with support have a higher self-esteem. Although this article is more than 5 years old, the subject is very much contextual (Duffy 2010).

Family and friends play a major role when it comes to providing mental support to the undergraduate students. Students with such support would surely feel more secure in the domain of education and would do better than the rest. All the academic sources that have been discussed point to the interrelation between student performance and support from family and friends.
