HIST 1000 Global Connections Rubric Description: Students are to choose a non-US focused news story of interest, attend a global cultural event (such as watching a foreign film, international food festival, etc.), or engage in cultural exchange (i.e. interview international student) and submit a three (3) paragraph write-up.In addition to fostering an understanding of global events, the assignment also makes students recognize and analyze patterns in history. Students will complete three (3)write-ups throughout the semester. The assignment accounts for twenty percent (20%) of the final grade. Format: The first paragraph (at least 5 sentences) is a summary of the article or event. In the case of a news article, the summary should include the author, source of the article, detailed summary of the main points, and the overall argument (purpose) of the article. For an event, summary should include basic information about the event such as name of the event, when and where it was held, purpose of the event as well as who was organizing or sponsoring the event. If conducting an interview, the summary paragraph should be a biography of the interview subject. The second paragraph (at least 5 sentences) discusses how the news article or event relates to the course content. This needs to be more detailed than the preceding paragraph. Here students’ need to identify one to two connections to at least one (1) primary source. The third paragraph (at least 5 sentences) needs to explain why the particular article and/or event was of interest and what insights about other peoples and cultures were learned. If a news article or blog, students should also include the link OR a copy of the article with the write-up.If an event, students need to submit, if possible, a link to event website or even a program. If one has conducted an interview, need to submit a transcript of interview that include questions asked and responses given by interviewee. Grading categories Summary of news article/event: Students are able to read, comprehend, and summarize main ideas of news article or cultural events. Use of primary sources: Students are able to manage and coordinate basic information gathered from primary sources. Students are able to make connections between primary sources and cultural news/events. Analysis: Students are able to develop their ideas using appropriate rhetorical patterns (e.g., narration, comparison/contrast, cause/effect, etc.) in response to their specific essay prompt/questions.
