In this assessment task we ask you to explore connections between the readings, lectures and the lived social relations of
our community.
TASK 1 Consider readings, tutorial discussions and lectures from weeks 1 to 4 from this semester.
? Select a community in which you are engaged (this can refer to a local/suburban community, religious community,
on-line community, leisure network, work group, student group etc).
? Select at least two relevant concepts discussed weeks 1 to 4 in relation to this community. (You can use the
Glossary in Van Krieken et al., or the tutorial questions, as a starting point.)
? Write an answer to the following question:
How do these sociological concepts help me to develop new insights into my community?
Your answer will be graded against the following criteria
1. Have I chosen a good example of a group and shown that I understand how it operates in a social sense?
2. Have I chosen relevant concepts and shown that I understand them?
3. Have I applied these carefully and systematically to the community group I have chosen?
4. Have I written an answer in scholarly English, with an introduction and a logical argument, which comes to a clear
conclusion? Does this conclusion directly answer the set question?
5. Have I used the text book / reference material adequately to substantiate my claims and to properly attribute
intellectual property to the correct sources? Have I correctly used the Harvard referencing system throughout this
assignment?
6. Have I presented my work according to instructions, in my own words, used Turnitin to submit, handed in the work on
time, with adequate academic referencing, making sure all words not my own are in quotation marks and referenced?
