Effects of national culture on organizational culture
write a “critical analysis”
 Writing your project report
• Not a presentation
• Not a cut-and-paste exercise
• State a thesis: (An idea you intend to prove and
support with evidence)
• Build your argument
Writing your project report
 • Not a presentation
 • Not a cut-and-paste exercise
 • State a thesis: (An idea you intend to prove and
 support with evidence)
 • Build your argument
 Thesis
 • Debatable
 • Turnover is bad for organizations.
 • Employee retention should be the primary focus of Human Resource
 Departments.
 • Uncluttered (one main idea)
 • Specific
 • Employee retention should be allocated 30% of the budget of Human
Resource Departments that employ predominantly blue collar
 employees.
 • Supported
 • As it is estimated that replacing a bluecollar employee costs about
60-100% of their annual salary (REFERENCE, 2009), HR departments
should spend 30% of their budget to retain the existing good employees
in order for hiring costs to remain managable.
Basic Structure of an argument
 • Introduction establishes the writer’s claim.
 • At least three sections citing three reasons to
back the writer’s claim. Each with in-depth
explanation as well as “proof” or evidence of what
the writer says. (field study: your data analysis
 would be this proof)
 • At least one section anywhere in the report where
the writer introduces an idea from the opposition
and finds a way to “disprove” it.
 • A conclusion section that reaffirms the writer’s
 claim and reasons for it.
