I have researched the effectiveness of leaderless protest and found that it is advantageous. Despite lacking hierarchical, vertical or central command, the strategy can apply to a wide range of movements, requires less incentive to contribute fully and successfully brings negotiations to the table between the government and the opposition. Nevertheless, the states attempt to disband the protest proves futile since it angers people and the international community condemns such a move (Chenoweth & Stephan, 2011).
Responses to my classmate answer:
My classmates’ view of the effectiveness of leaderless protest is remarkable. In fact, the non-violent protests seem to be more successful in places where violence did not work. The non-violent resistance campaigns in Iraq had positive outcomes in achieving territorial demands to the anti-regime resistance. Moreover, the tactics upholds commitment to a solution between the government and the opposition and it takes fewer risks and costs to participate (Chenoweth & Stephan, 2011).
Response to question two:
I have read study materials and found opposition campaign leaders seem to attract international support through the social media. I have noted that the civil actors in Saudi Arabia were developing capacity for mobilization, communication and collective action through the use of the internet. In order to expand the international attention, the activists have developed a civil society where people with no political power can bring a challenge to the current regime. However, the opposition campaigns cannot be effective without regional leadership since the short-lived nature of the campaign movements will be unable to form a concrete program, making it difficult to achieve long term corporations. I also find that the non-violent tactic fails to obey the partial success as the government can repress the non-violent act by since they will be viewed as illegitimate forces (Chenoweth & Stephan, 2011).
Response to my classmates answer:
I concur with my classmates’ observation that opposition campaigns will have no ground if not supported by regional leadership. External forces compromise the agenda the opposition campaigns that are trying to uphold since Arab’s nations are not united and face constant interference from the foreign nations. In an effort to redeem the revolutions in Arab’s nation, the use of social media empowers the opposition campaigns (Bishara, 2013).
