One of the main issues Dave Hesmondalgh is concerned with in Cultural Industries is the ways in which the structure of the communication system affects creativity and diversity in cultural production, that is, the ability of cultural producers to come up with new ideas and circulate them. Drawing on he discussions of the Internet we have encountered in this class—in Hesmondalgh’s chapter, Vaidyanathan’s book and in lecture, discuss some of the ways in which creativity and diversity are enhanced or limited by the new media structures emerging in the age of digital technology.
