Both assessment items must be completed in order to be considered for a pass. Throughout this course, you have learnt about a range of theories relevant to children and young people’s learning and development. This knowledge will inform your future pedagogy (professional theories and practice). 1. Drawing on a minimum of three theories, outline the key aspects significant to your understanding of children and young people’s learning and development and how these theories may be incorporated in to your future practice. a. With reference to scholarly material, discuss the theoretical concepts significant to your developing pedagogy, inclusive of definitions. Briefly describe each concept and its relevance to children and young people’s learning and development, including strengths and possible limitations. b. Describe how these theoretical concepts will relate to your future educational practice. For example Consider how theory informs how you set up your physical environment, how you program, how you interact with students and parents etc. Consider how educational theory underpins policy such as the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. For example Standard 1 – ‘know your students and how they learn’ and Standard 3 – ‘plan for and implement effective teaching and learning’ relates to all theories Some examples of how theory informs educative practice include – Vygotsky’s Socio-cultural Theory highlights the importance of collaborative learning – Piaget’s Cognitive development Theory emphasises the importance of a constructivist curriculum – Bronfenbrenner’s Bio-Ecological Systems Theory gives emphasises to understanding children and young people’s broader life. c. Conclude by recapping on what you have presented in the form of a summary statement. Your essay should include a Title, Introduction, Body of the Essay, Conclusion, and References . All pages should have a footer which should include your name and student ID and Tutor. All pages should be numbered. Any tables or figures referred to should be placed in an ‘Appendix’ at the end of your essay (not included in word count). Proofreading your essay before you submit it electronically is essential. Poor spelling, grammar and punctuation may impact on your grade. Submit your essay via the Learnonline on the course website by 5PM Friday 5th June 2014. Extensions may be requested for extenuating circumstances only. You may request this online via Learnonline on the course website, only after you have permission from your tutor. Formal approval will be issued by the course coordinator only via online. Assignments submitted late without an agreed extension will result in a fail grade. F1 grades will be given the opportunity to resubmit for a maximum P2 grade. Referencing – A minimum of 8 scholarly references are required (course text is essential). Scholarly references include academic journals, text books, policy, recognised curriculum documents, and reputable websites such as ‘Simply Psychology’. Websites such as Wikipedia, ask.com, and other blogs are not counted as scholarly, regardless of who writes them. Academic Integrity – Your work must be original and referenced appropriately to avoid plagiarising.
