The real topic investigated in Oedipus Rex is that destiny and character are entwined. Oedipus is destined to perform such terrible deeds, but his conduct, which drives him to doing these things determine his destiny. The unlawful acts that he conferred against his dad and mom were repulsive yet not as abhorrent as that of disregarding the very signs, which could have averted the disaster. By not paying regard to the prophet or following the bits of gossip about his legacy, Oedipus set into motion the destiny that was appointed to him. His assumption and egotism about his character lead to his fall. Sophocles accepted that people have freedom of thought yet they are restricted as opposed to clarity, and in doing so he must assume liability for his activities.

A minor subject is that of self-knowledge being the major element to the comprehension of an individual’s place in the universe. It is just through Oedipus’ investigation into his legacy that he finds the agonizing truth about who he is and what it implies to be human. In spite of the fact that he must resign the throne, relinquish his family, and demolish his family and his sight, Oedipus is given the knowledge of self-knowledge. His visual impairment thus gets to be unexpected because it is only when he loses his sight that he begins to understand his character; something he did not have in the past.

Disposition

The disposition of the play from the starting point to the end is that of decimation, devastation, and despair. The play opens with Thebes experiencing an extreme torment because of an uncertain homicide. This mindset of agony and contamination is accentuatedmust be sought

The Greeks did not allow comic intervals in tragedies because they would weaken the impact of the catastrophe. In such a case, a definitive objective of a tragedy, that of expurgation, would get to be impossible. Subsequently, even in Oedipus, there are no comic scenes. The dismal, pitiful, and irritated mind-set overwhelms the whole play.
