The first objective of this paper is to offer a definition of colonization. Remember that colonization “projects” did not all take the same form so your explanation of the term should be broad enough to encompass a variety of forms of colonization. Next, you should offer several factors that motivated various nations to colonize other territories. Be as specific as possible in this section by elaborating upon a few specific historical examples.

The next step for this assignment is to assess several specific outcomes or consequences of colonization during the modern period (1600 to the present). This is where you want to focus on the imperialistic consequences that began with European exploration and colonization as early as the 1400s CE (note: exploration began that early but your examples should come from 1600 or after). For more negative consequences you might think about which indigenous traditional practices were disrupted or eradicated as a result of contact with and colonization by Europeans? In terms of more positive outcomes you might think about mutually beneficial trade agreements between colonizing peoples and the colonized. Note: my examples are not meant to be an exhaustive list of issues to discuss, but rather a starting point. As always, be specific about period, place, and groups within your answer.

One additional point on negative and positive aspects of colonization, remember that what may be beneficial for the colonizer might not be for the colonized. Thus, assessing the effects of colonization should account for differences in experiences when applicable.
