1.1 Identify and isolate the concept. (What are the primary meanings of the concept?)
1.2 Specify your use of (definition) of the concept. Indicate the derivation of your choice (e.g., You used Smith & Jones definition, or synthesized your own definition from the work of Sims, Harold, and James.)
1.3 List the Critical Attributes (defining) of the concept as you are using it.
(Hint: for a detailed definition, you will probably have only one or two CAs; if you have a general, non-specific definition, you will probably have 3 or 4 CAs. ) [Another hint: Do not list as a CA anything already stated in the definition. 2.1 Discuss relevant literature for understanding the concept.
2.2 Incorporate research findings that are significant. (Dont worry Not all concepts have research literature related to them. But be sure you have covered all the current literature.)Factor 3: Concept with Antecedents, Cases and Consequences 50%
3.1 Develop a Model case, which describes the concept and includes all the critical attributes.
3.2 Develop Borderline, Related, Contrary, and Invented cases, each stated in the form of a scenario. For each scenario, state This is an example of a (related, borderline, etc) case because Make these statements specific to your concept. Do not repeat the definition of the various cases.
3.3 Determine Antecedents for the concept. (Hint: Review definition of antecedents; remember that these are things which must be present in order for the concept to occur. Do not cross over into definition or PROCESS.)
3.4 Determine the Consequences of the concept having occurred. (You may wish to think about long term vs. short term consequences, or expected, anticipated, or intended vs. unexpected consequences to be sure you have included all possibilities.)
3.5 Designate the Empirical Referents for the concept as you are using it. Remember: These must be measurable.
3.6 Examine the interrelationship between the antecedents, empirical referents and consequences as they apply to your selected concept.Factor 4: Relevance to Nursing 15%
4.1 Discuss implications for nursing Practice, Education and Research.
4.2 Document implications with previously conducted research studies or literature.
Factor 5: Grammar and APA format 5%
5.1 Maximum length: 12 pages, not including cover sheet. (5 points will be deducted for each half page that exceed limits)
5.2 Follow rules of standard American grammar
5.3 Follow APA format, with specified exceptions.
