Public Speaking

You are to select Four DIFFERENT Speeches on You Tube – one for each question area. Each Speech must be different. The speeches should be at least 4 minutes in length.

I. Introductions

1. Provide me with the link to the speech you watched and give me a short summary of the speech you watched.
2. Analyze the introduction in terms of the four functions of an introduction as defined by your textbook
• Gains and maintains favorable attention:
• Relates their topic to your audience
• Relates their to the topic:
• Previews the message by stating the purpose and forecasting the organization of the presentation

3. Provide me with specifics in terms of which method your text discusses that the speaker used to gain attention.
4. Evaluation the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the speaker’s introduction.
5. Did the conclusion relate back to the introduction and, if so, how. 6. Watch the following video clips (http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/007730943x/student_view0/video_series.html):

Summarize the effectiveness of each of these tools discussed in the video clips (be specific enough that I will know that you watched them) and then give an example of how the speech you watched could have employed each one.

II. Conclusions

1. Give me the link to the speech you watched and give me a short summary of the speech you watched.
2. Analyze the conclusion in terms of the three functions of a conclusion as defined by your textbook.

• Specify what the audience should think or do in response to their presentation:

(In other words, give me the function of the conclusion and tell me how the speaker handled it in the speech you watched — for example, summarized three main points — then tell me the three main points that were summarized).
4. Evaluation the effectiveness of ineffectiveness of the speaker’s conclusion.

III. Vocal Delivery

1. Give me the link to the speech you watched and give me a short summary of the speech you watched.
2 Evaluate and critique the speech focusing on the VOCAL delivery of the presenter. Comment in detail on each area, comment as to what you found effective or ineffective, and comment on areas that could be improved upon.
For example:

Pitch: highness and lowness of voice, upward and downward inflections

Rate: Words per minute, appropriate variation of rate for the difficulty of the content

Pause: intentional silence designed to aid understanding at appropriate places

Volume: loud enough to hear, variation with the content

Enunciation: correct pronunciation and articulation

Fluency: smoothness of delivery; lack of vocalized pauses, good pacing, rhythm, and cadence without being so smooth as to sound artificial, contrived or glib.
IV. Nonverbal Delivery
1. Give me the link to the speech you watched and give me a short summary of the speech you watched.
2 Evaluate and critique the speech focusing on the NONVERBAL delivery of the presenter. Comment in detail on each area, comment as to what you found effective or ineffective, and comment on areas that could be improved upon.

areas to comment on:

Gestures: natural movement of the head, hands, arms and torso consistent with the presenter, topic and situation.

Facial Expressions and smiling behavior: consistent with the message, used to relate to the audience, and appropriate for audience and situation.

Eye Contact: natural, steady without staring, includes entire audience and is responsive to feedback.

Movement: purposeful, used to indicate organization, natural, without anxiety, use of podium, distance from audience.

Physical appearance: appropriate for the occasion, presenter, topic and audience.
