Chinese cultural artifact
Context: Dictionary.com defines an artifact as ?any object made by human beings, especially with a view to subsequent use,? and ?any mass-produced, usually inexpensive object reflecting contemporary society or popular culture, [such as] artifacts of the pop rock generation.?
To make decisions about where we stand on political, ethical, commercial, etc. interests, we must use our critical abilities to analyze the artifacts that create and inform our realities. In this paper, your job is to critically examine an artifact, image, or idea from popular culture and show how it reflects and/or influences culture. You may analyze an artifact from any culture with which you are familiar; it does not have to be American culture.
Remember as you select your artifact that your goal is to practice using critical analysis and critical writing to generate new knowledge about that artifact. As you work on this essay, we will continue discussing critical thinking and analysis, along with reading texts that engage in cultural analysis.
Audience: For this essay, your audience is your classmates from a different culture than your own. As you work on your essay, you must consider the best ways to address this audience. After you choose your artifact, you will interview a member of this audience to determine what they know about the artifact and its place in your culture, and what you would like them to know. Remember that your essay is addressed to this audience; it is not about them.
Visual(s): Some visual representation of your artifact is required for this assignment; include it either on a cover page or on the last page of your essay.
Requirements: Your paper should be a full three to five pages long, using a standard 12 or 13 point font, double spacing, and one-inch margins. Type your name,WRA 150, and our section number at the top of the first page, and number the pages. All final papers must be stapled.
To the back of the paper, attach a short (about one page), typed reflection on the assignment: What did you find challenging about it? What invention, arrangement, and revision strategies did you use?
