Bureaucracy

As discussed in class, bureaucracy is oft-described as the “fourth branch” of government. Choose one of the traditional three branches (executive, legislative, and judicial) and discuss the bureaucracy’s effects on that branch. Additionally, discuss whether, in your opinion, the fourth branch is a positive or negative addition (or both) to the American Political System. 1-2 paragraphs: Identify the branch, its powers, and how the bureaucracy interacts with the branch. 2-4 paragraphs: Describe how the bureaucracy affects the branch. Explain how the bureaucracy affects the branch in either a positive or negative (or both) way. Whatever your belief, try to recognize counter-arguments. For example, if you think a bureaucracy’s impact has been positive on the branch, still try to give counter-arguments as to why they are not, and then try to develop reasons as to why those counter-arguments are incorrect or unfounded. For example, one can discuss how the President has little authority over the lower-level bureaucrats, and how this makes it difficult for President’s to oversee the system, but at the same time, it depoliticizes decision making in the bureaucracy. 2-4 paragraphs: Using examples and the arguments you made previously, state whether you think the bureaucracy is a negative or positive addition to our government. You may broadly incorporate the other branches if you wish. What I’m looking for here is your overall impression of the bureaucracy. In this section, also try to look at the positives and negatives of bureaucracy from the standpoint of a citizen. For instance, to use an example from above, you could talk about how the “rule making” process is problematic (or not) from the standpoint of a citizen trying to engage in politics. As usual, 2-3 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman.
