The Biblical Word Study assignment is designed to assist you in studying the Bible directly for yourself regarding biblical words related to counseling and addiction. You will study three counseling-related words and three addiction-related words. A step-by-step process that illustrates how to do the word study follows. The Biblical Word Study Grading Rubric is also available for your review.

Steps to Follow

1.     

Go to www.blueletterbible.org. (NOTE: The Biblical Word Study Instructions are based on this website. This resource has each of the words in available sources and provides straightforward access and process. You may use other sites/resources, however, be aware that you run the risk of not meeting all of the expectations of the assignment). Type the word(s) you are studying into the Bible/Dictionary Search box. We will use the word advice as an example. Click on the drop down for Version and choose New American Standard Bible (NASB). (NOTE: You may use other versions, but be aware that you run the risk of not meeting all of the expectations of the assignment). You will then see results from the NASB concordance for the verses where Hebrew and Greek words are translated as advice.

Notice that there are two tabs in the NASB Concordance for window. The Primary Results tab shows you the Old Testament (translated from Hebrew) and New Testament (translated from Greek) verses in the NASB that contain the word advice. The word you search for is in red and the blue number superscript is a link to Strong’s Concordance. For example, in Jdg. 20:7, the word advice is translated from the Hebrew word corresponding to Strong’s number H1697. In 2 Sam. 16:20, advice is translated from the Hebrew word corresponding to Strong’s H6098. What that indicates is that various Hebrew words are translated as advice.

In order to get a better understanding of how those Hebrew words are used elsewhere in the Old Testament, click on the blue superscript link beside the word. As an example, click on the blue 6098 link beside advice in 2 Sam. 16:20. When you do, you are taken to a page with Lexicon Results and Concordance Results. Under Lexicon Results, you will see information related to the biblical usage of the Hebrew word that was translated as advice. Under Concordance Results, you will see all the verses in the NASB Old Testament where the Hebrew word corresponding to Strong’s H6098 is translated as advice. Reading some or all of these passages can give you a fuller picture of how this Hebrew word is used throughout the Old Testament. At the Primary Results tab mentioned in number 2 above, you can follow a similar process for finding the New Testament verses where the Greek word(s) are translated as advice.

Suppose you wanted to know more about 2 Sam. 16:20. Go back to the Primary Results tab and notice that the verses are also blue hyperlinks. Click on the 2 Sam. 16:20 hyperlink. You are then taken to a page where you will see various letters (K, C, L, I, V, D) in a column to the left of the verse. Click on the L and a box with available commentaries for this verse appears. Click on the drop down arrow and you will see available Audio/Video and Print commentaries on this passage. Find the David Guzik Study Guide for 2 Samuel 16, click on that link, then click the Go button. You are then taken to David Guzik’s commentary for this chapter. Scroll down to C. Absalom’s Counselors. and you see Guzik’s comments. Read 2. (20–23) and notice the information about advice from this passage. Unfortunately, in this instance, it was foolish and destructive advice!

If you wanted further information about this passage, you could go back to Primary Results/L/drop down/Jamieson, Fausset & Brown Commentary on 2 Samuel 16 and click Go for those authors’ perspectives. You can do this for any of the commentaries listed.

Keep in mind that all of this information is about one verse from the NASB with one Hebrew word translated as advice ! Follow a similar process for each of the counseling words and the addiction words.

Notice at the bottom of each Blue Letter Bible page there is a Cite This Page: section. Please note that this information is not in APA format, but does contain the information needed to put your citation in APA format. Do not simply copy and paste this as your citation.

Description of Resources

1.     

Concordances
give you the verses of the translation or version of the Bible you are using that contain the word you wish to study.

2.     

Bible Dictionaries
define the word and provide descriptions of how the word is used in the Old and New Testaments.

3.     

Lexicons
give more technical information about the word being studied and provide helpful summaries of biblical usage.

4.     

Commentaries
help you understand the verses where the word occurs and the biblical context in which it is used.

The body of the Biblical Word Study is to be 6–8 pages in length. It must be written in APA style with a title page, abstract, and reference page. See the Biblical Word Study Template for more details.
