A Detailed Discussion on Aunt Hetty on Matrimony
Aunt Hetty on Matrimony is an extremely funny piece which also carries some truth. Men often get bored with their wives and neglect them. In the present time, both men and women can equally neglect each or one another. Men and women will always require each other no matter what. As the piece concludes, aunt Hetty pleads with the girls, to avoid marriage since their husbands will remarry after they die. She however, tries to stop herself because no matter her warning, the girls will try marriage at some point in their life.
Aunt Hetty takes her time to advice girls. She seems disgusted with issues to do with love and marriage. According to her, love is a farce; matrimony a humbug; husbands are domestic Napoleons, Neroes, and Alexanders¦ (Fanny 47). This implies that she does not believe in these things and is therefore, advising young women. She probably has had a unpleasant experience that makes her take the initiative to advise young women. She however, agrees that women always want to try marriage at some point in their life.
Aunty Hetty believes that once a man is assured of your heart; he goes ahead to conquer other heart. Men barely do anything to build the home and expect the women to do it all. Their work is to leave early and come late, and deny women necessary care and love. Therefore, matrimony is the hardest thing and should be left alone (Fanny 48). Remain aloof to any gentleman who gives his attention; until one of us can verify his circumstances (Fanny 16). She advises that should seek to know a man more before engaging with him. This is because men are crafty and will always look for other women.
