The final project for knowledge class will be a Model United Nations simulation. In order to participate you will be expected to research, write, and debate.

Over the next three weeks you will be walked through the process of Model United Nations. It is of the utmost importance that you keep up with all assigned topics so that you are best prepared for debate sessions. All assignments for this will be filed under the final project grade which makes up 20% of your total grade.

Below you will find a brief description of each of the assignments that you will need to complete along with a rubric.

Country Profile

You will research and collect important information on your assigned country. This research will lay the foundation for all other work you do.

Position Papers

An essay detailing your country”s policies on the topics being discussed in your committee. Writing a position paper will help you organize your ideas so that you can share your country”s position with the rest of the committee. If you conduct extensive research, a position paper should be easy to write.

Resolutions

The final results of discussion, writing and negotiation are resolutions—written suggestions for addressing a specific problem or issue. Resolutions, which are drafted by delegates and voted on by the committee, normally require a simple majority to pass. All other UN bodies use resolutions to make recommendations or suggestions for future action.

Speeches and Debate

Public speaking is one of the most important skills you will use as a Model UN delegate. You will need to convey your member state”s positions, help build consensus and formulate resolutions. Usually, the length of time a delegate is allowed to speak is set by the conference organizers. You will have numerous opportunities to speak in during a Model UN simulation. Participating and giving speeches is vital to your success in MUN.
