Part A: Analysis of print news (1000 words)
Analyse the content of two newspaper pages – one from an Australian/Victorian newspaper and one from an oversea newspaper
– The pages MUST be from the early general news pages (pages one,three, four or five).
– Please include originals, or scans or photocopies, of the newspaper pages you have analysed and ensure your examples are taken from those pages.
– The pages may come from the same day or different days.
– Overseas newspapers may be accessed online from the link in the news tab of the Journalism Subject Guide (accedded from the Deakin Library homepage or from the subject guide link on DSO). You may use a print copy of the overseas newspaper if you prefer.
– Do not use free local papers.
– Do not use wraparounds.
Part B: Analyhsis of online news (1000 words)
Analyse the home pages of two online news sites – one from an Australian/Victorian news site and one from an overseas news site.
Please include a screen print of the online news pages you have used.
Suggested approach:
Your discussion should show a critical understanding of the elements of editing and design and how they contribute to setting the news agenda and making meaning for reader.
Include a list of references (in Harvard Referencing style) and include sources such as any sode of ethics or sub-editing texts or websites you have used to back up your arguments.
The assignment (both parts) should include discussion of the following:
– Story selection and placement;
– Headlines;
– Leads (newspapers) and summaries (online pages);
– Photographs;
– Page layout;
– Typography;
– Captions; and
– Links to additional content, such as video audio files on online pages
