Academic Integrity

You are required to write a paper about academic integrity. The purpose of this outcome is for you to gain a better understanding of the value of academic integrity, why it is important, and the impact that the advancement of technology has on academic integrity. Your paper must be emailed to the conduct
administrator that assigned it to you.
Your paper must address the following:
? What does “academic integrity” mean? Why does DU consider it to be important? Research the
academic integrity policies of at least two different colleges or universities and compare them with
that of the University of Denver.
? John and his roommate Mark are in different sections of the same English course. Mark asked John
if he could see his paper on Macbeth, so that he could get some “pointers.” John agrees and gives
Mark a copy of the paper on a flash drive. Later in the week, John discovers that the two of them
are being accused of plagiarism because Mark’s paper is identical to the one written by John.
o Should John be held responsible for academic misconduct? Why or why not?
o What would be one fair and reasonable way for the instructor to resolve this situation?
o What are the pros and cons of this resolution?
? There are many different web sites available which offer completed papers for students to
download. Some of these sites justify this with the explanation that the papers are provided as
“inspiration.” Do you believe those resources serve a useful function? What message is being sent
to students by these “term paper databases?”
? Reflect upon the incident which prompted this outcome. Why did you make the decisions you did?
Were your decisions ethical? If faced with a similar situation in the future, how would your
behavior be similar and/or different? Why?
? How do you think this incident has impacted your college career? What impact do you think it
could have post-graduation?
This paper must be typed in 12 point font and double-spaced with one inch margins and must be no less
than 1000 words in length. You are expected to include appropriate citations and use appropriate grammar
and spelling.
