a snippet of a man’s life

Writing Fiction

Paper details:

This has to be a short story. It would be a snippet of a man’s life. This man is a soldier who fought and killed innocent people including men, women and children. The story should be told through the perspective of the soldier. It should end with a tragic event such as something like this: We were raiding a village and I ran from house to house frantically pointing my gun at victims inside. A boy watched as his father fell to sound of my bullet, his face frozen in a silent scream. I took a step towards the boy and pointed my gun towards his head. The sound of the gun rang loud and clear.
And suddenly I was wrenched to reality. I ran to where the boy had collapsed onto the ground, his blood adorning the ground with rosy petals as if forming a bier.
Blind fear filled my mind and I screamed at the boy to wake up. I reached for the boy’s pulse. It beat but only faintly – mocking me, making me believe for a moment that the glassy state that had come over the boy’s eyes would diminish and return to normal.
But it didn’t.
I frantically shook the child and pressed onto his heart as if to revive him. But slowly, the child’s pulse faded and his body became cold and limp in my arms.
An animal-like scream filled the air, a composition of raw agony, pain and hysteria. I put my hands over the child’s ears as if to save him from hearing such a noise. My arms covered the child, as I hysterically thought I would protect him from whatever the sound was coming from. I would allow no further harm would come to this child.
It was only as the general came to force me away, that I realised the scream was mine.
